24.25 hours to new year

The year is about to end, and I feel like it should feel a bit more… definitive. Like there should be a checklist item to cross off, or firm plans for the new year. Something. Instead of this generic time-to-change-the-calendar feeling.

I guess this is why people have New Years Eve parties. Because giving the old year some fanfare and welcoming the new year with some hoopla feels like giving the whole matter some substance.

I guess this is why people set resolutions that they know they will break in the first week. Because the setting of it is the thing that makes the new year seem like something.

Every day is the start of a new year; it’s all in when you choose to start counting.  God’s mercies are new every morning.

With so many fresh starts and new beginnings, it’s a wonder any of us ever get bored, under-enthused, underwhelmed.

Change the countdown: tomorrow starts a new year. Let’s make it a good one!
